Asia Network for Dance (AND+) Core Group Visit to Singapore & Malaysia

Since the launch of Asia Network for Dance (AND+), its core members have been actively introducing this network on the international platform to connect Asia’s dance network to the world. At the same time, more than ten members from around Asia have been meeting regularly to discuss the possibilities for development and practice in Asia’s dance scene. Each meeting is held at a different location so that members can visit Asian cities and countries in person to observe and learn about what is happening in the local dance scene. After our first meeting in Hong Kong in May last year, we had meetings in Taiwan and Australia. In October, the core members of AND+ came to Singapore and Malaysia, and we started our conversation about the details of how AND+’s future activities could be carried out while enjoying the local Southeast Asian dance traditions during our packed six-day schedule.

We started in Singapore. On the first day, after our meeting, we had two exchange sessions organised by Dance Nucleus, a studio space supported by the National Arts Council of Singapore. In one of the sessions, multi-media artists and dance researchers Nirmala Seshadriand Soultari Amin Farid demonstrated and presented their studies on how movements and ways of displaying the body in traditional dance may be integrated into contemporary work. As we all know, there is a rich diversity of Southeast Asian traditional dances. To extract elements from these dance styles and incorporate them in contemporary works requires a huge amount of research, analysis, experiment and evaluation. I was impressed by the years of effort Seshadri and Amin have put into this research, and I agree that traditional dance is a key cornerstone for contemporary dance works. The interaction of these two genres produces a unique artistic vocabulary, helping dancers convey the message in their works. Apart from Dance Nucleus, the Esplanade national performing arts centre also arranged a number of activities for our stay, including watching performances at da:ns festival, their yearly festival, and a dinner gathering with local dance artists. As we ate, we talked about works and personal stories, deepening the understanding between local dancers and choreographers and us, the “Asian foreigners”.

Our second stop was Malaysia. We got on a cross-border coach early in the morning, and in the blink of an eye, we went from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur. We did not book a hotel in Kuala Lumpur, instead, we spent our two nights there in the suburban area at Rimbun Dahan, a private residence for artists. Rimbun Dahan welcomes artists of different disciplines to participate in residency programmes — there are painters, dancers, and even writers. On our first night, we had dinner with dance artists active in Kuala Lumpur. In fact, I felt at home that night because many Hong Kong and Taiwanese dancers have moved to Kuala Lumpur. We talked about the development of dance in the city, learning that dance companies struggle to sustain themselves since government subsidies are far from enough to cover operating costs, so most dancers in Kuala Lumpur work as freelancers. Also, due to the lack of suitable performance venues in Kuala Lumpur city, the government provides very limited support for the development of dance, causing artists to rely on each other for information and resources to create their work. These external factors have fostered a small but close community of dance artists, counting on each other like a family.
AND+ core members’ next stop will be Yokohama, Japan. After more than a year of planning, AND+ will be organising a series of seminars and workshops at the TPAM - Performing Arts Meeting in Yokohama in February 2020. I hope to see more friends from the Hong Kong dance scene joining us there, to drive Asian’s dance development forward together.
