2018 ICE HOT Nordic Dance Platform 2018

Since joining City Contemporary Dance Company, Jacky not only had the chance to communicate with local artists to collaboratively develop the possibilities of dance, he also played the role of Hong Kong’s cultural ambassador, building relationships with fellow workers in the dance industry and interdisciplinary artists. He had opportunities to participate in local and overseas art festivals, art fairs and conferences. These opportunities broadened his horizons and network, and at the same time increased his exposure to people in overseas dance industries. On every trip, whether meeting new people or seeing old acquaintances, their thoughts and experiences always lead to rounds of brainstorming. Thanks to Dance Journal, I can share with readers what I saw and learnt through Dance Travelogue.

In the past few years, there have been more connections in dance between Northern Europe and Hong Kong. For instance, the concept for HOTPOT – East Asia Dance Platform, a collaboration between our company, Yokohama Dance Collection and Seoul International Dance Festival since 2017, originated from ICE HOT Nordic Dance Platform. In addition, West Kowloon Cultural District’s three-year residency and exchange program “Creative Meeting Point: Hong Kong x Finland”, a collaboration with three dance companies from Finland – Dance Info Finland, Zodiak – Centre for New Dance, and Dance House Helsinki, also fostered exchanges between local and Finnish artists. Before the end of 2018, I arrived at the capital of Iceland, also the geographically northernmost capital city in the world, Reykjavík, to take part in the fifth ICE HOT Nordic Dance Platform.

ICE HOT Nordic Dance Platform is co-organized by dance organizations from five Northern European countries, namely Dance Info Finland from Finland, Dansens Hus Oslo from Norway, Dansens Hus Stockholm from Sweden, Dansehallerne Copenhagen from Denmark and Performing Arts Iceland from Iceland. I first participated in 2016 in Copenhagen, at that time my main purpose was to announce the establishment of HOTPOT – East Asia Dance Platform, and to observe Northern European dance works to learn about the development of dance in the region. After two years, I have come to the world’s northernmost capital city to be in ICE HOT 2018, and I think the perfect portrayal of the event is the collision between the freezing cold weather and the passion to create.

ICE HOT Nordic Dance Platform 2018 consisted of 19 performances, 19 production pitches in the MORE MORE MORE session each morning, 14 workshops and seminars, three morning dance courses and optional local tours. The organizers of ICE HOT also provided a sharing session for HOTPOT to introduce our development and vision to curators from different countries. We gained a lot from the one-hour sharing session, in which we talked about the experience and possibilities of co-organized dance platforms, and many participants shared inspirational ideas and advice.

Apart from hosting the sharing session, our four-day schedule was filled with performances and activities in ICE HOT. There are two performances that I would like to share, not for the reason that they were particularly good or bad, but their uniqueness gave me a deep impression.

The first piece of work is the immersive dance performance Diorama by Norwegian choreographer Ingri Fiksdal. This performance is adjusted according to the environment, landscape and urban characteristics of the performance venue. In this performance in Ægissíða, on Iceland’s coastline facing Greenland, dancers dressed in sleeping-bag-like costumes became part of the natural scenery. As they wriggled slowly by the seaside, the space gradually transformed into a collective meditation space. Never have I imagined myself by the sea in Iceland, in a big jacket and blankets, holding a cup of hot tea in mittens, the wind slapping at my face for a whole hour; yet my eyes never looked away from the magnificent scenery, a special scenery constructed both naturally and artificially (the dancers’ movements). This performance, with the oneness of heaven and humanity, depicted the harmony of nature. It was a landscape painting, beautiful and alive.

The second performance that I have to share is Listening Party by Ásrún Magnúsdóttir, a choreographer from the organizing country, Iceland. Yes! It was a party, a party that belonged to young people below 18, and the party dance floor was their stage. These youngsters were not all trained in dance; they each chose a song that they liked, then sang and danced with their friends on the dance floor. Theirs were the most honest of bodies and the most candid of interactions. Audience above 18 (including me and the performers’ parents) were listeners, it was a chance to listen to this group of “kids”. At a glance, they were just ordinary young people, shy in speeceh and not expressing themselves very well. But when they threw themselves into the world of their favorite music, I think even their parents had never seen their bodies move so unself-consciously, and with such passion and enthusiasm. The audience began to dance along, and finally all were invited to the dance floor to join the young people’s party. In this performance, there weren’t any difficult techniques, there weren’t any advanced technologies, they weren’t discussing any hot topics, but it was indeed an illustration of truth, goodness, and beauty. The performing area was filled with the most candid bodies and souls.

ICE HOT 2018 in Reykjavík, Iceland was the last stop of the first round of ICE HOT Nordic Dance Platform. Since ICE HOT’s debut in Stockholm in 2010, this dance platform contributed greatly to the Northern European dance industry, not only fostering international exchanges but also establishing the position of Northern European dance in the global dance scene. I’m looking forward to the next round of ICE HOT, and I hope it continues to lead the Northern European dance scene to shine brightly.
